چکیده

While nature exerts precise control over the size and chemical composition of minerals, this is still a challenging task for artificial syntheses. Despite its significance, until now, there are still no reports on colloidal mineral nanoparticles in the subnanometer range. Here we developed a general gas diffusion strategy using 10,12-pentacosadiynoic acid as a ligand and ethanol as a solvent to fabricate stable amorphous mineral clusters with a core size of less than 2 nm. First discovered for CaCO3, the method was successfully extended to produce monolayer protected clusters of MgCO3, SrCO3, Eu2(CO3)3, Tb2(CO3)3, Ce2(CO3)3, Ca x (PO4) y , CaC2O4 and their hybrid minerals, Ca x Mg y (CO3) z and Ca x (CO3) y (PO4) z . All the mineral clusters can be well dispersed in organic solvents like toluene, and are stable for a long period without further crystallization. Our work paves a way for the artificial synthesis of colloidal mineral clusters, which may have various uses in both fundamental research and industry.

A solvothermal method for synthesizing monolayer protected amorphous calcium carbonate clusters.

A solvothermal method was developed for synthesizing organic monolayer protected amorphous calcium carbonate clusters using 10,12-pentacosadiynoic acid as ligand, ethanol as solvent and NaHCO3 decomposition as CO2 source, which can be extended to synthesize other monolayer protected mineral clusters.

Facile syntheses of monodisperse ultrasmall Au clusters.

During our effort to synthesize the tetrahedral Au20 cluster, we found a facile synthetic route to prepare monodisperse suspensions of ultrasmall Au clusters AuN (N < 12) using diphosphine ligands. In our monophasic and single-pot synthesis, a Au precursor ClAu(I)PPh3 (Ph = phenyl) and a bidentate phosphine ligand P(Ph)2(CH2)(M)P(Ph)2 are dissolved in an organic solvent. Au(I) is reduced slowly...

Stable colloidal dispersion of luminescing silicon nanoparticles for ink-jet printing

Over the past years, printing technologies have attracted considerable attention due to the possibility of manufacturing low cost printable electronic devices. Therefore, a high industrial demand exists on stabilized dispersions of nanoparticles in aqueous as well as non-aqueous solvents. In this study, we synthesize silicon nanoparticles (Si-NPs) in a gas phase microwave plasma reactor. The su...

Stable prenucleation mineral clusters are liquid-like ionic polymers

Calcium carbonate is an abundant substance that can be created in several mineral forms by the reaction of dissolved carbon dioxide in water with calcium ions. Through biomineralization, organisms can harness and control this process to form various functional materials that can act as anything from shells through to lenses. The early stages of calcium carbonate formation have recently attracte...
